Over the years, the question has gone from, “What would I do on the Internet?” to, “What would I do without the Internet?!?”
When I was in Primary School, there were 4 basic needs for human beings to survive that were taught in school; food, shelter, water and… uh, air? I cannot quite remember the last one but I am pretty sure that over the years the 4 basic needs have had some technology intruders coming in; mobile phones and the internet.
We rely on the internet for so much; I shall use personal examples to explain how our reliance on the internet has become a necessity in each part of our lives;
School
Now, I know I speak on behalf of 90% of people in the world when I say that Wikipedia was always our “team mate” on each of our school projects and presentations. The answer was always a search bar away and before the university introduced “Turn It In”, the project completion was a copy-paste and a little edits away. The internet is the base of the research most students from university, high school and junior school use for help in their school work.
Work
If you are in the business of having to do research for your job position, I am pretty sure that the internet is where you run; first to Google your competition then compare your company’s online presence with the successful company overseas which you consider your idol. Apart from just that, many of the companies find their clients online through the social networks, the online adverts etc.
Communication
When’s the last time you wrote a letter? I was talking to a friend of mine the other day and she was telling me that she has gotten so used to “auto-correct” in her emails that she has forgotten how to spell so many words. We don’t write letters anymore, we send a Tweet, a Direct Message, a Facebook Message, a WhatsApp, a BlackBerry Message, an e-mail… etc. Some people still send Hi5 Messages! We rely on the internet to communicate with our friends near and far.
Information
You are reading this… Need I say more? We read articles online, because we know that there are there in plenty, no matter the topic. Also, its where we get all the news from around the world; if you are not watching CNN, BBC, Aljazeera, you’ll probably end up online later to find out what has been happening around the world. We also use the internet to catch up on the juicy celeb gossip and news like Barack Obama changing his presidential entry song to “All I do is Win” by DJ Khaled.
Shopping
To all my ladies out there (and some gentlemen too) not only do some of you rely on the internet for the latest fashion trends but also for the online orders. We see something we like, having it is such a credit card details away.
Relationships
I’ll leave that one for each person reading this to answer how the internet came in for their relationships; *cough online orders and online cosmopolitan cough*
Let’s face it people, we are the Internet’s B*[email protected]% ~ She has us wrapped around her World Wide Web!
