I unconsciously find myself working the majority of my day; from the minute my eyes open, it’s a quick prayer to thank God for another day and straight to reaching across my bed to shut my alarm off and get straight to my email and any messages or missed calls that might have come in early in the morning or during the night. Before I go to sleep, it’s my inbox that says goodnight to me.
Like many of us, I also get too involved in my work and forget about myself, do not get me wrong, I love what I do but at the end of the day, I love me more and all of us should learn how to make time… for ourselves. In the midst of my crazy work week, I made it a point to have time for almost every aspect of my life;
Health
When we work too hard, we forget to eat healthy; fast food becomes our go to meal because it’s quick and filling but, you guessed it; unhealthy! I hate eating unhealthy but I LOVE to snack so I made it a point to search for all the right things I can snack on during the day; dried fruit, nuts, fresh fruits and every cheat once in a while… the ever so glorious dark chocolate! My lunches are filled with salads, healthy sandwiches and soups (my tummy just growled)
Take care of your body because no one else is going to do it for you. Google is your friend, search for smoothie recipes, salads, and healthy snacks your tummy will love!
Exercise
I do not know about you but rolling out of bed to exercise has got to be the hardest thing on the planet for me to do! I have a problem getting out of bed as is and now getting out of bed early in the morning to exercise? Shoot me now! But alas! It is possible, I spend 20 minutes of my morning doing a quick work out to get my heart going and break a sweat, it gets me filled with the ammo I need to start the day (I really am not a morning person!) so I consider it my coffee.
Pick a time that works for you to take a walk, go for a run, go to the gym, work out at home or do something that is you taking care of YOUR body.
Serenity
Every week from 6 o’clock to about 7.15pm, I set aside for my yoga class and boy oh boy do I feel serene during that time. It was a hard schedule to start and stick to but when I finally did, I found myself unconsciously making sure that that hour and 15 minutes every week was ME-TIME and I never scheduled any meetings or dates at that time.
What is it that keeps you serene? Is it taking a walk, sitting at a café? Take that time for you… to breathe. It is amazing how a serene hour is like a charger.
Relationships
My family and my friends mean the entire world to me so every week, I do make time for them. Work can make anyone forget about their relationships but not you… not us!! I go for lunches, breakfasts, a glass of wine (or 3), dinner, comedy shows and the list goes on and on with friends and family.
Take time to spend with the ones you love, don’t let work consume all your time… those papers won’t love you back!
Spirituality
I am a practicing Catholic and I take the time to sit in peace every Friday at 6 in church and just talk to the BIG Guy upstairs and tell him about all the good, bad and hilarious. It is a very peaceful time for me, just like yoga, it’s the only other one hour I escape from technology and just be. Every Friday at 6 and every Sunday at 10am.
However you decide to be spiritual or religious, whether with your yoga, church, mosque or just meditating…. DO IT!
I came to the conclusion last week that work will never end (I know it took me that long!) so I spend a lot of time working on the business and on my career but I do not forget me 🙂
